MEDICAL IDENTITY THEFT ANOTHER REASON YOU NEED A CREDIT REPORT

MEDICAL IDENTITY THEFT ANOTHER REASON YOU NEED A CREDIT REPORT

By now we are all fairly aware of the fact that identity theft is one of the highest rising forms of crime plaguing the U.S. today. But did you know that just behind that is another form of identity theft that can be dangerous not only to your credit rating, but your health too?

That’s right medical identity theft is also on the rise in staggering numbers. The last federal data collected for a report in 2007 was that there were 250,000 victims each year of medical identity theft, and that was the number of reported cases, it is widely believed that the actual figures are much higher than that, and has certainly increased since the last report in 2007.

Another reason experts in the field feel certain there may have been an increase in the medical identity theft arena is due to the ever rising number of people unemployed, workers who no longer have health care benefits due to the fact they have suffered a job loss in this recession. These are the working ill; people with serious or chronic health issues, yet who are still able to work while having a chronic or pre-existing health condition, and now find themselves without that direly needed health care coverage.

Additionally, are those workers who they themselves were not ill, but had a family member on their work health care family plans that are ill, and that are no longer covered, thus leaving many in a dire situation of needing continuing medical care, but not having the ability to pay for it or to become insured due to a pre-existing condition. Some of the reported cases of medical identity theft have been of a friend or family member utilizing a covered person’s medical insurance for treatment of health care issues after losing their own coverage due to the loss of employment, but with the knowledge of the insured. Although not an exact case of identity theft because the insured was aware of the fraudulent identity being used in order to have access to medical treatment it is a crime of insurance fraud, as tragic as that is.

This growing problem is such that it is expected to rival the standard case of identity theft in the coming years if we do not improve the methods of which our health care records are kept, namely to electronic record keeping throughout the medical/health care system in the United States.

It is equally important in the area of urgent care to correct this problem immediately, as in the case of medical identity theft, the actual unaware insured patient who comes into an emergency care facility may be incorrectly treated if they have been a victim of medical identity theft and doctors treating the patient are actually pulling up the treatment records of someone who has stolen your identity, the consequences could be harmful or even fatal.

To date the only remedy to this situation is the services of a company with constant monitoring of your credit report, or while it was once suggested that one yearly report to be sufficient, experts now recommend that every 6 months is a more prudent approach to this problem. Check your credit report thoroughly and report any discrepancies to the proper authorities both locally and federally. While you cannot be held responsible for the charges of medical identity theft, it is a long and complicated process of straightening out the false claims, and a good reason that contracting with a credit monitoring agency may be the best answer to this problem. As it stands you are entitled to a free credit report once a year and can obtain one by going to; www.annualcreditreport.com .

AMERICANS ARE SAVING MONEY RATHER THAN SPENDING IT

AMERICANS ARE SAVING MONEY RATHER THAN SPENDING IT

The tumultuous economy has had such an effect on consumer spending, or more accurately the lack of it, that the Federal Government is considering pushing through another round of tax breaks and spending to help stimulate the economy. That Americans aren’t spending their stimulus checks and are saving the new found money instead of pumping that money into the stagnant economy has left the Obama administration seriously considering the idea of pumping another round of stimulus money into the damaged economy to get it moving again.

The figures indicate that American households increased their savings rate to the greatest level it has been in more than the past 15 years, due in large part to the stimulus money that the government had hoped would bolster the economy. Instead most consumers opted not to spend the money, but rather to bank the money in their nest eggs with the present fears of continued high unemployment. Economists predict there will be a continued trend for conservative spending even after the economy starts to rebound because this particular recession was so deep and far reaching. We as a nation learned some very difficult lessons from the Wall Street and subsequent economic collapse we have endured, these lessons we are not to forget any time soon.

Prior to the recession Americans were spending $1.15 for every dollar they earned with a buy now pay later mentality and very little if any at all in their savings account. This will be a new area of fiscal responsibility the likes of which we have not seen since the Great Depression, according to the leading economists around the country, as we have seen the enormous shift in the mindset of American households.

Families today have had to make drastic adjustments to their way of thinking about their financial priorities, opting to buy only what they really need as opposed to what they want. Record numbers of people wisely sought out the assistance of credit counseling agencies to help them reign in their spending and create a budget plan they could live with, as well as to help them with debt management issues.

So many people who were on the brink of foreclosure or bankruptcy and feeling hopeless about their financial troubles were pulled back from the brink with the help of a reputable credit counseling agency. Whether it was a simple matter of debt management and budget planning or as detailed as the process of debt consolidation or debt settlement we have learned a new found intelligence regarding our spending and debt management habits that the top economists say will linger long after the recession is over.

The savings rate which was hovering at about zero in 2008 surged to 6.9% percent, which is the greatest level of saving since 1993 and economists say that we can expect that trend to continue as the economy slowly recovers. The best that we can do as a whole is to practice wise debt management, seek credit counseling when we cannot manage our debt on our own, and never forget the hard lesson learned that you can’t continue to live above your means without having to pay the piper.

MINORITY CREDIT COUNSELING AVAILABLE

America has traditionally been seen as the land of plenty and of opportunity for immigrants coming here to make better lives for themselves and their families, but this recession has brought some changes that may be making America less attractive these days.

Money transfer agencies that usually handle the transactions for many immigrants, who often send money home to their families in their native country to save for them when they return at a later date, or help to support a family still living there, are not coming in as often or some have stopped coming in at all. In fact store operators say that many are coming in not to send money, but to pick up money that is being wired back to them from their native country.

During a recession minorities are often hit the hardest during tough times, with a high number of minority workers in the labor, construction, and service industries often being the victim of layoffs, this recession has taken its toll. While they often have friends they have made from their native countries here in the U.S. many are without family members or any support system in place when tough times occur and do not know where to find assistance, often times language is a barrier.

For those that may be in need of financial help coping with the bills many reputable non-profit credit counseling agencies are specializing in credit counselors that speak your language. Hiring representatives from the Haitian and Guatemalan communities to assist clients that have a language barrier or simply feel more comfortable being able to make those types of important financial decisions in their native language in order to fully understand the financial plans being made for them and the help it will offer.

If you or a friend is having difficulty with paying your bills and want assistance, credit counseling is confidential and a counselor can help you to determine if their services can assist you with resolving your money or debt management problems. The consultation is free of charge and may be just the answer to your money woes, so contact a non-profit credit counseling agency today and get the support you need.

Tax Attorneys - You might Need One

Tax Attorneys

A tax attorney, as the name suggests has specialist skills in taxation laws. The specialization of the tax attorney does not limit him to take on tax related cases only although he is most apt to handle tax problems because of his expertise. Businesses in particular are highly recommended to have a qualified personal tax attorney that can help them get out of complex tax related situations. Businesses and individuals alike need to take measures to find a tax relief professional who will be able to help them in finding tax relief and a solution to their tax problems.

In general tax attorneys have two basic ways in which they can help you. The first of these is tax planning. Basically in this regard they will act as financial managers who will manage the entire financial affairs of your business. The main purpose of rendering these services is to ensure that each process is completed without any glitches and so that you do not face any tax difficulties in the future. With their advanced training and education tax attorneys will be able to guide you through every step so that you have all your financial matters under control when it comes to dealing with the IRS.

The other valuable service that tax attorneys have to offer is when dealing with tax controversy. This is when a tax attorney defends your rights lest you get your self into a tax controversy. In cases where you have already gotten yourself into tax difficulties the services of a tax attorney will help you to straighten your financial affairs and thereby clean your name. By employing the expertise they will be able to remove liens wherever possible, reduce penalties and conduct all the negotiating with the regulating authorities.

As to the question when should you hire a tax attorney? This question is the relative and it is totally up to you as to when you want to call upon the services of a tax attorney. If you want to start off on the right foot and avoid getting into any financial mess from the beginning then it would be wise to hire a tax attorney on a monthly retainer basis to keep a check on your financial affairs. Using his expertise you will be able to work on his advice and warnings thereby making sure nothing goes wrong, tax attorneys can also work in coordination with your accountants to see that everything is balanced out.

In other cases people prefer to call in on tax attorneys only when they fall into tax difficulties and feel that they cannot handle the situation themselves. Although it would be much better to work in consultation with the tax attorney from the start if you haven’t been doing so at this moment in time you have no choice other than hiring tax attorneys to deal with the IRS.

The cost of hiring a tax attorney also factors in when deciding when to hire one. Monthly retainer fee can go up in the hundreds and in some cases it can cost over $1000 a month. Of course this depends on the responsibilities and duties that you will apply each a tax attorney with. In other cases where tax attorneys are called upon for consultations during tax difficulties they usually charge an hourly rate.

Dangers of Debt Consolidation Loans

Monday, June 29th, 2009

A personal loan is one that is unsecured such as a loan to rebuild your car engine. That is, a personal loan is not secured by something that the bank can take if you do not pay that loan back on time. These unsecured loans are relatively rare today unless you deal with a small local bank (which are also rare today). Today most banks would tell you to use a charge card for these types of loans rather than sign an unsecured loan. However, as personal loans do still exist, you should understand what you are getting into with them.

As with any loan, you are signing a contract. And what is written on that paper in black and white is very seldom negotiable. Therefore, if you borrow money for some reason, be aware that the bank will come after you for repayment even if there is no collateral involved.. If you need money to start your own business and then cannot make those payments, the bank will take you to court and will win their case easily. In other words, stay away from personal loans if at all possible.

Consolidation loans are usually personal loans also. Again, we see ads every day asking us to consolidate all of our outstanding debt into one loan. They tell you that this will usually mean a smaller monthly payment for you. However, which is better? Should you continue to pay off your loans or now have one loan that may be a smaller monthly payment but will just take you longer to pay off? Remember that the consolidation loan will pay off your debts plus all of the interest you would be paying on them. However, you will now be paying a bigger loan with additional interest on it and usually the interest is much higher. Also, if you get into even more financial trouble in the future, instead of having several smaller payments each month that you can work with the lending agency in order to make smaller payments or even float one payment for a couple of months, you will now have one big payment that you must meet every single month no matter what. We are talking even more pressure here.

Please stay away from these consolidation loans. They will not help you financially in the long run and can definitely end up hurting you.

Collateral Loans

A collateral loan is secured by something. In other words, you get the money you want but the bank can take from you whatever item or items you used as collateral if you default on the loan. Let’s say you took out a few thousand dollars to start a small business and used your stock holdings as collateral. If you do not pay back that loan, the bank can sell the stock to cover the loan. If the sale of the stock does not cover the entire loan, the bank will sue you for the remainder of the loan plus court costs and interest. There is no room for negotiation on these types of loan as you have nothing to negotiate with.

Therefore, a house mortgage or a car loan are types of collateral loans. No financial institution wants to repossess your car or foreclose on your house. It is a lot of bother and they will generally end up losing money in the process. That is, because your house has devalued instead of gaining equity, the bank will not be able to resell it for its original value. And even a one-month old car immediately depreciates as soon as it is driven off the lot so they will be lucky to get back their loan money on it if they have to repossess.

And do you want them to repossess or foreclose? Of course not. For one thing, you have already paid a good deal of money out of your pocket that you will not ever see again. For another thing, it will go on your credit report and it will be a long time before you are able to buy another house or car. And even if you do get a future loan, it will be at a higher interest rate because of the negative credit rating. We certainly want to avoid the result of not making our payments if at all possible.
